EOS EVM Live on Testnet
The EOS Network Foundation (ENF) established the EVM+ working group in early 2022 with a mandate for delivering an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) on EOS. The EOS EVM features full RPC compatibility, predictable gas usage and billing, and ETH precompiles as EOS intrinsics.
After nine months of research and development, the EOS EVM is ready for release and poised to leap ahead of the competition in price and performance. Utilizing the EOS network, the EOS EVM achieved over 800 swaps per second in tests, beating out the nearest competitor Solana by almost 3x, based on a benchmark used in outside research. The EOS EVM also benefits from the network’s low transaction fees, with transactions likely to cost under a cent.
The ENF outlined the EVM project in April of 2022, with the express purpose of driving usage on the EOS chain while providing a layer-two scaling solution for Ethereum. After experimenting with a gas fee model utilizing a new token under the name TrustEVM, the EVM team reworked the model to use native EOS tokens for gas fees. This new model runs on the testnet using the EOS token and the EOS EVM name.
The EVM will provide an instant on-ramp for Solidity developers to build on EOS while leveraging all of the tools, libraries, and open-source code with which they are already familiar.
To accelerate the onboarding of Solidity projects, the ENF provides developers access to funding via Pomelo, direct grants, and the EOS Yield+ liquidity incentive program. EOS EVM will likely bring new users eager to take advantage of EOS’s speed and efficiency.
ENF Q4 Quarterly Report
Each quarter the ENF provides the EOS community with a detailed report with an overview of the organization’s activities, grants, and financial expenditures over the preceding three months. The most recent quarterly report from Q4 2022 gives detailed status reports for ENF initiatives, including software development, Antelope Coalition priorities, ENF Grants, and more.
In addition to the release of new versions of the core software Leap v3.2.0 and developer toolkit CDT v3.1.0, the report provides important updates to the EOS EVM, which the EVM team has re-architected to benefit the EOS network. It also shows progress on development items identified by the Antelope Coalition, like the Wharf software development kit (SDK), which just released an alpha version of its first dev kit, and Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC), which is in the last stages before deployment.
In Q4, the ENF hired multiple new team members. These new hires are taking on functions the organization previously achieved through contractors or direct grants, like copywriting and developer engagement.
The ENF also welcomed new CTO Bart Wyatt. In his new role, Bart will oversee the ENF engineering team. As an original contributor to the Antelope codebase, an ENF grant evaluator, and a game developer, Bart is deeply familiar with the technology and the wider ecosystem.
The quarterly report also provides updates and statistics delving into Pomelo, .gems, and EOS Support. Each of these partners addresses a critical outreach need in the EOS ecosystem for developer outreach, marketing, and technical support, respectively.
Through the transparency of these operations, participants can understand where the network’s tokens are going and evaluate the effectiveness of the ENF’s priorities and initiatives.
EOS Support Shares EOS Audit
In another show of community collaboration, EOS Support released an audit of the top 15 grants from Pomelo Season Four, calculated before the Pomelo team applies its matching grant adjustments. This audit serves as an additional source of analysis that provides ecosystem accountability. It also highlights project milestones and provides status updates for these grants.
The highlighted grants include ZEOS, EOS Hot Sauce, EOS Bees, EdenCN, Recover+, and EOS Support.
ZEOS
ZEOS enables Zcash-like private transactions for all tokens and applications in the EOS Ecosystem. The new zk-SNARK proving system ‘Halo2’ opens up new possibilities in protocol design for private transactions on smart contract platforms. In the new system, Halo2 proofs validate entire transactions using a single proof bundle rather than just single actions.
Since last season, ZEOS upgraded its code to incorporate Halo2 proofs and open-sourced the code. The team also published code examples and a sample application called ZEOS Orchard that utilizes ZEOS.
EOS Hot Sauce
Hot Sauce is a weekly news show delivered in under 30 minutes that brings the voice of the EOS community. It brings the latest EOS news and development from Pomelo, the EOS Fireside Chat, EOS community events, and more.
The Hot Sauce team has published 30 episodes since Pomelo Season 3, racking up over 9400 views across YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and bilibili.
EOS Bees
EOS Bee Swarms consist of a large network of real humans incentivized to engage on social media content to advocate for open-source Web3 technology. Swarms Amplify and create content to produce freely consumable information about EOS.
Since last season, the Bees launched a commenting and education system, bringing EOS to the masses with more bees and better comments. The team tracks Swarm data publicly on Notion.
EdenCN
EdenCN is the Chinese-language variant of Eden, which explores, researches, discusses, identifies, and selects the most appropriate Antelope and EOSIO projects in the Chinese community.
EdenCN adopted the Genesis Eden experiment, translated documentation to Chinese, and created guides and videos for the EdenCN community. The team already ran a trial election and an on-chain election. While preparing for the next election, EdenCN promotes Eden and collaborates with Chinese-speaking builders.
Recover+
Recover+ (R+) is a cyber-security portal and rapid incident response program for exploits on the EOS chain.
Recover+ safeguards EOS DeFi projects and their users through bug bounties and white-hat incentives. It launched in October 2022 with 21 currently active projects. The recovery framework already successfully resolved a hacking incident during the season.
EOS Support
EOS Support is a customer support line for EOS, a global, multilingual, community-driven customer support service acting as a trusted concierge of the EOS Network. It works to provide quality content to support EOS Network and its users. It provides practical articles, guides, giveaways, news, and 24/7 human assistance.
EOS Support serves the EOS Network. They offer support in 9 Languages: English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Turkish, Russian, French, German & Italian, and achieved 87.8% satisfaction across 200 support tickets. EOS Support also tracks scams, provides community awareness through the EOS Support Twitter, and works with project owners to implement surveys, chat widgets, and free customer support for their projects.
Through their audits, EOS Support has provided increased transparency and insight into some projects building on EOS.
Greymass Releases Unicove
Greymass debuted a new look to its website alongside its hotly anticipated wallet project, Unicove. Unicove is a portal to Antelope and EOSIO blockchains, a secure & easy to use web wallet that interfaces with the Anchor authenticator to provide users with an easy onboarding experience. It also allows users to purchase EOS directly from the app. Aaron Cox and Tony Licavoli share details and explain the motivation behind Unicove on the most recent episode of Greymass’s podcast, Coffee With Greymass.
Greymass directs its passion for UX into Unicove. Greymass has been developing easy-to-use wallets from the first days of EOS. Unicove is the culmination of years of experience balancing ease of use for users while encouraging good security practices.
Greymass is also amidst an initiative spearheaded by the Antelope Coalition, the Wharf software development kit (SDK). Wharf aims to present an experience familiar to developers of existing Web 2.0 platforms. They previewed the first module of the kit, the Session Kit, and released version 0.1.1 and 0.2.0. Any developers interested in development can follow along with the weekly project status meetings on Wharf’s website.
Yield+ December report
The Yield+ December report circulates statistics and charts related to Yield+ performance in December. While crypto is still in a broader bear market, EOS has seen a relative increase in TVL, which diverges significantly from the trend across the market.
Fourteen dApps are now participating in the program, with eleven qualifying for rewards. Totoro Swap is a new addition for this month.
Although EOS still ranks outside the top 20 chains regarding absolute TVL, its specific TVL growth diverges from the systemic decline experienced elsewhere. EOS also sees a 7.5% growth trend in the key TVL to Market Cap ratio from previous months, demonstrating sustained and resilient development.
